Big inning by Hancock ends Milford season

Top-seeded Hancock scored six times in the fourth inning and then held on for a Section Four Class D 7-5 semifinal victory over Milford at home on Tuesday.

The Wildcats (17-4), champions of the Midstate Athletic Conference, advanced to the sectional final for the sixth time in seven years. They’ve won the last four sectional titles and advanced to the Class D state final last season, losing to Fort Ann.

Milford (14-5), the fourth seed, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI double by Stephen Banks before Hancock responded with its big inning.

Ryan Smith, who went 2-for-3, began the fourth inning with a base hit. He came around to score on a single by Preston Walker to tie the score. The Wildcats then received a two-run double from Seth Simmons and a two-run homer by Zach Worobey that made it 6-1.

Paul Van Warner hit a two-run single as Milford pulled to 6-3 in the fifth inning.

Eli Holton’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth gave Hancock a 7-3 lead.

Milford scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

Van Warner went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Milford.

Hancock will face MAC rival Deposit (12-7) in the final at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Damaschke Field.

‘‘They are a very athletic team,’’ Hancock coach Brandon Olbrys said of the Lumberjacks.

Hancock defeated Deposit, 10-4, in April.

‘‘It should be fun, but it is baseball and anything can happen,’’ Olbrys said.
