CCS swim team making a splash

The Cooperstown boys swim team started its season 3-0 and has a Frontier League title within its reach.

“We’re started very well; we’re very happy about it. We look very good this year as we have a lot of depth,” coach Cheryl Rock said of her team of 21 swimmers and diver, Aaron Idelson. “All of our returning swimmers are swimming very well this early in the season with some best times already.”

Rock said that the team has great leadership with captains Erik Mebust, Eamonn Maguire, Matt Frevele and Milford’s Luke Zenir, who returns after being away on student exchange last season.

“What I love about this team is the leadership of our captains,” Rock said.

On Tuesday, the Redskins had their best meet of the season, winning nine of 12 events and beating visiting Holland Patent 101 to 79. Erik Mebust won the 200 freestyle, Sean Mebust won the 50 and 500 freestyle, Zenir won the 200 IM and 100 butterfly, Frevele won the 100 breaststroke and Idelson won the diving competition. The team also won the 200 free relay and 200 IM relay.

On Dec. 6, Cooperstown won 93 to 80 at Rome Free Academy. Zenir won both butterfly events, Erik Mebust won the 50 and 500 freestyle, Sean Mebust won the 100 free and 200 IM, Michael Kern won the 100 backstroke, Idelson won the diving and the Redskins won two relays.

On Dec. 3, Cooperstown opened the season with a 94 to 75 win over visiting Sherburne-Earlville. Erik Mebust won the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle and Idelson won the 100 backstroke and placed first in diving. The duo also led the team to relay victories. Idelson swam the anchor leg for the 200 medley team that included Zenir, Frevele and Sean Mebust. Erik swam the last leg for the free relay team that included Zenir, Frevele and Ryan Erichsen.

“We are also surprised by Erichsen, a senior, and first-time swimmer who has just taken off in the 50 and 100 free,” Rock said.
