Idelson wins Frontier diving title

Hawkeye boys close in on league championship

---- — Cooperstown’s Aaron Idelson won the Frontier League diving championship on Saturday in South Jefferson, beating his 11-dive school record by more then 40 points.

Idelson who scored a 373.85, beat Sherburne-Earlville’s Ethan Kurth, who finished second with 362 points.

Idelson won the Section Three Class C diving championships on Feb. 9, 2013 at Mexico with a school-best 331.

“The meet was an exciting one, but was also a very nerve-wracking one,” Idelson said. “All-in-all I was pretty happy with my performance.”

The match was close most of the way.

“After the first round, I was only in the lead by six points, and after the second, my lead was narrowed to five,” he said. “There was never any point in the meet where I knew I was going to win.”

Idelson said that some of his dives scored lower than he expected, but he was able to let the scores go and focus on his performance.

“The biggest thing is not paying attention to the scoring, to not let the judges get in your head,” he said. “On two of my dives I got all sevens, except one judge who gave me a four and a half both times. You can’t let the judges get in your head. It completely throws off your game.”

Idelson and his teammates are closing in on a Frontier League Division C title after beating Holland Patent on Jan. 16. Cooperstown is 5-0 in the dual meet season and has beaten the second place Golden Knights twice.

Cooperstown’s boys won all but two events against HP and won 100-79.

Sean Mebust earned victories in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 free. His time of 2 minutes, 8.22 seconds in the 200 IM nearly broke David Bonderoff’s school record. Bonderoff’s mark is 2:08.08. Mebust touched in 53.11 in the 100 free.

Ted Mebust also earned a pair of victories. He won the 50 free (25.20) and the 100 backstroke (1:00.27).

Michael Kern (200 free, 2:03.96), Aaron Idelson (diving, 199.45), Ivan Bae-Braunstein (100 butterfly, 1:04.89) and Tae Livermore (100 breaststroke, 1:14.71) also won events for Cooperstown.

The Hawkeyes have two more home meets, on Jan. 28 and 30. This weekend they will compete in the Frontier League swimming championships. The swimming and diving section meets and state qualifiers are in February.
