---- — Cooperstown’s volleyball team clinched the Center State Conference Division II title on Monday with a home victory over Herkimer.

On Saturday, the Hawkeyes placed second in their five-team invitational tournament.

“I think we are about where I thought we would be (in the season), I’m very pleased,” said Cooperstown coach Rich Jantzi. “I knew we would be a touch better than last year.”

Junior Katie Franck was named to the tournament all-star team and ended the day with 16 kills, 16 aces and 19 assists. Sophomore Caroline Leonard also contributed 24 kills, fours, aces and two blocks. The Hawkeyes finished 6-2 overall.

The tournament consisted of five teams, with each team playing two games against each other.

Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, who took first place, handed Cooperstown one of their two losses on the day, defeating the Hawkeyes, 25-21 in their first game.

The second game between the two teams went back and forth with Cooperstown winning, 28-26.

“These teams are all pretty equal, all pretty successful programs,” Jantzi said.

Central Valley, who beat Cooperstown in their first game of the tournament, 25-23, finished the day 4-4. Stockbridge Valley went 2-6 and Waterville came in fifth place, with a record of 1-7 on the day.

“We played very well, other than missing some serves, but overall, I’m pretty happy with them,” Jantzi said. “We had one loss to Central Valley and one to VVS, but the best stat of the day was that we scored over 21 in all eight of our games. We had no blowouts.”

Cooperstown (12-2, 6-1) is in a good position to make a run in sectionals, he said.

“There are a lot of strong programs this year,” Jantzi said. “We have a seeding meeting Feb. 2, and we will be seeded anywhere between two and six.

“They are pretty smooth, I do feel good about the rest of the season,” Jantzi said. “We are in good shape for sectionals.”

Cooperstown will host Hamilton on Saturday at 5 p.m.
