CCS tennis wins division title in CSC East, finishes season 9-1

Section play begins Monday

Cooperstown’s tennis team won a division title in the first week of May and finished the season 9-1 in division play.

Cooperstown clinched the Center State Conference East Division with a 4-1 win at the Clark Sports Center on May 6 over Sauquoit Valley.

The team is 14-2 overall after a season-ending 3-2 loss to Mount Markham in a non-league match on Monday.

The only other loss was at Holland Patent on April 4 with a score of 3 to 2. The team avenged that loss with a 4-1 win at the Clark Sports Center on April 24.

“We have a very strong and deep team this year,” coach Dave Bertram said.

Jimmy Anania finished the season 15-3 at first singles. Jason Cadwalader finished 17-2 at second singles and Will Cadwalader was 12-5 at third singles.

In doubles, Max Ofer and Lyman Townsend finished 7-7 at first doubles. Max Clinton and Andrew Von Tsurikov finished 11-1 in second doubles.

On Friday at the Clark, Cooperstown beat Little Falls 4-1 to finished division play. Anania won 6-2, 6-0 at first singles over Tim Failing. Jason and Will also won in straight sets while  Clinton and  Von Tsurikov posted a shutout at second doubles.

On Monday, the team lost at home 3-2 to undefeated Mount Markham. Anania again won at first singles, beating Warren Solo 6-3, 6-3. Clinton and Von Tsurikov won the other match for Cooperstown, with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Will Day and Connor Manion at second doubles.

The match came down to a tight first doubles game, with Jarrod Hubbard and Josh Roys edging Tanner Clinton and Lyman Townsend, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Draws for the Section Three tournament will be done Friday. Section play begins Monday at the Utica Parkway Courts.

“I think all of our spots have the potential to win a section title,” Bertram said. “It will depend on where we get seeded and who we draw in the first round. It is always an interesting tournament.”
