---- — Milford will be exploring wrestling in the Cooperstown program this season.

The possibility was brought up at Milford’s Sept. 26 board of education meeting.

Milford’s athletic director Frank Spurchise said that he’d met with his counterpart in Cooperstown, Monica Wolfe, over the summer, who expressed an interest in Milford athletes participating in Cooperstown’s wrestling program.

After consulting with Milford superintendent Peter Livshin, Spurchise decided that such an arrangement should be confined to modified, grades 7-9, at this time, due to a lack of wrestling experience among Milford’s high school class.

“(Wolfe) is coming down, along with one of their coaches, to see if there is any interest,” said Spurchise, who characterized the possibility as a shared services proposal. “I have no idea what the interest is.”

This also raised a question from one of Milford’s board members.

“Is there also then the potential to explore volleyball with Cooperstown?” said board member Alicia L. Fish.

Spurchise said that would depend on whether Cooperstown had the need or desire to open up their program, and that schools that combine generally do so because of a numbers issue.

“There’s no reason that we can’t go ask,” he said.
