Janet M. Gorman

Janet M. Gorman
COOPERSTOWN — Janet M. (Remondelli) Gorman, an exemplary American who was loved by many, died peacefully at her home at the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home on Sunday evening, March 30, 2014. She was 97.
Born and raised in Newark, N.J., she entered this life on Feb. 17, 1917, the daughter of Peter and Amelia (Amadeo) Remondelli. After graduating from high school, she attended nursing school at Newark Memorial Hospital and trained as a surgical nurse.
Just prior to World War II, Janet enlisted in the United States Army Nurse Corps on April 17, 1941, and was assigned to Fort Hancock, N.J. Following the destruction of Pearl Harbor, Janet trained newly recruited Army nurses to serve as surgical nurses in the Pacific Theater. Captain Remondelli served in the Pacific Theater as a surgical nurse and operating room supervisor for the duration of the war.
While serving in the Pacific, Janet met her future husband, USAF Lt. Col. Leo F. Gorman. They were married in 1946, and remained so until Leo’s death on Nov. 16, 1965. The Gormans raised three children.
As her family became established, Janet returned to nursing and served as nursing supervisor at Central General Hospital in Plainview for many years.
Upon her retirement, Janet moved first to East Orange, N.J., and then to Cooperstown. She was a member of St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Roman Catholic Church, the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 in Cooperstown, the Cooperstown Women’s Club, and the Clark Sports Center Senior Bridge Club.
Janet enjoyed playing golf, working on the Bereavement Committee at St. Mary’s Church, volunteering for Bassett Hospital by making and donating baby blankets, and playing bridge with several different groups.
Janet will be remembered by her family and many friends as a fun, generous, and well-organized individual (she was a take charge kind of gal!).
