I haven’t had a bird report
in awhile, but we are still enjoying
our summer birds
around the area. Bill and
Marsha Mabie have had numerous
finches, some orioles,
flickers, a pair of cedar waxwings,
busy little hummingbirds,
among other birds.

I’d been sprawled on the
couch, watching the Olympic
swimming, contrasting the
athletes’ grace, skill, and
stamina with my own splashand-
splatter style at the
Clark Center. Suddenly I
heard the back door slam
and Anne’s voice at a shout.
“Get out back quick!

The village board is looking at undertaking
another streets project and another bond.
The project is a comprehensive $3 million job
that would include work on water lines, sanitary
and storm drains and street resurfacing in the
South End of the village.

Just when we had decided
that Cooperstown was being
recognized for more than just
baseball, we started reading
an article on bromeliads, of
all things, only to stumble on
the comparison of a given
garden being to bromeliads
“... what St. Andrews is to
golf or what Cooperstown is
to baseball: a living shrine.”

Some assembly required

I’ve blundered into a
metaphysical problem again,
or perhaps the Twilight Zone.
Perhaps you’d like to help.
Like many gents of my
age, during the night I take a
constitutional or two the
bathroom. I stand for a while
in quiet rumination and then
return to bed. The other
night, around one, I shuffled
barefoot onto the cold tile but
paused by the basin. In it,
halfway up the side, was a
water beetle.

This morning’s chill in the
air is a reminder that summer
is waning and flannel
shirt days are just around
the corner. As is summer’s
wont, we will experience
some hot dog days now and
then. We have certainly had
quite enough of lightning
and thunder.

Weather Watch

During the past week, the
Northeast got the coolest
weather in the nation. That’s
because of a series of low
pressure systems that rotated
around a large upper-level
trough in place over eastern
Canada. This provided unusually
cold air aloft, and a
very unstable atmosphere.

Over the years, we have
always been interested in
what various publications
say about our fair corner of
the world. And while we suspect
that most of what is
written specifically about
Cooperstown revolves around
baseball, this summer we
have noted several articles
about Cooperstown which
emphasize that there is more
to Cooperstown than baseball.

Our garden this year is
doing well, but last week was
surely hard to do much in it
with all the rain we received
and the constant thunderstorms
off and on throughout
the week.

No more tears

Last week, friends, I told
you the bittersweet story of
old Brother Azarias, a monk
in the order to which I belonged
for 13 years. Azarias
was long dead when I did my
novitate as a Christian
Brother, but stories of his bizarre
behavior still hung in
the novitiate’s air, a quarter
century after his death.

Cherry Valley’s Tim Horvath certainly knows
his own.
