The Cooperstown golf team finished second among 14 schools in the Section Three Class C tournament on Monday at Baker Brook Golf Course in Oriskany Falls, and had four players qualify for the state qualifier tournament in the process.

The Redskins sent five sophomores and first year player Ethan DiLorenzo, a senior, to sectionals, and saved their best performance of the season for last.

The top five CCS players combined to shoot 439, defeating third place Herkimer by just two shots. Tully won with a 408.

``I am really proud of the way the team finished the season and how they came ready to play for a sectional title, as a coach I couldn’t ask for anymore than that,’’ said CCS golf coach Dave Pepolinski.

``During the tournament I was a spotter for the players on a hole that has a couple of trouble spots, and as the team passed by throughout the day I could tell by their attitudes the day was fun and they were playing pretty well.’’

Baker Brook is a par 72 course and plays about 6,200 yards, Peplinski said.

Cooperstown sophomores Harrison Clinton (85); Sam Bowen (85); Jeff Flynn (86); and Isaac Herman (86) all qualified for the State Qualifier tournament at Seven Oaks Golf Course in Hamilton. They were among 22 who qualified among the 86 players at sectionals. The first round will be held today, and those who advance to the second round will play again on Saturday.

``The kids are really proud to have made it to the State Qualifier,’’ Peplinski added. ``It is a real honor and a great accomplishment.’’

Clinton, Flynn and Herman also qualified to play in the Center State Conference Championships Thendara Golf Course on June 2.

``Overall we have had a very successful season and the returning players are already talking about next year,’’ Peplinski said.
