COOPERSTOWN — In basketball, there is solace.

Tournament MVP Jack Lambert scored a game-high 32 points while mourning the death of his grandfather — Paul Lambert, 87, a longtime coach, educator and administrator at Cooperstown Central School who died late Wednesday — and host Cooperstown won its Dick White Holiday Tournament for the fifth straight year with a 76-49 victory over Sidney.

"I dedicate this performance and this award to him, for sure," said Lambert, a junior shooting guard. "He was a great coach, a great teacher and a great player, at Hartwick College. He loved basketball, he had a passion for the game and he was my No. 1 fan.

"My teammates were really there for me tonight," Lambert continued, "and this game gave me a little moment to honor my grandfather."

Lambert had 16 points at halftime, including two three-point baskets to begin the game. Cooperstown led 39-24 at the half despite senior center Owen Kennedy getting in foul trouble in the second quarter.

Lambert scored 14 more points in the third quarter, as Cooperstown turned the game into a rout. The Hawkeyes led 63-34 after three quarters, and pushed the lead to 30 points several times before the substitutes finished the game.

Lambert also had six rebounds and five assists. Kennedy, who made the all-tournament team, had another double-double, with 19 points and 10 rebounds for Cooperstown (4-2), which hosts Little Falls on Wednesday.

Steve Smith, who won the sportsmanship award, had 14 points to lead Sidney. Ethan Fitch also made the all-tournament team, and scored 11 points, and Liam Matthews and Malik Howard each scored 10 points for Sidney (5-3).

Dean Read of Unatego and Mitch VanDerwerken of Cobleskill-Richmondville also made the all-tournament team.
