Ted Mebust had a senior night to remember Jan. 16. However, visiting Rome Free Academy clinched the Center State Conference boys swimming title with a 94-92 win over host Cooperstown.

Mebust posted two state-qualifying times at The Clark Sports Center, making the mark in the 50 freestyle and the 100 backstroke.

RFA trailed the Hawkeyes early in the swimming events, but had big diving scores, and took the lead late in the meet.

An 88-84 RFA lead going into the final event, the 400 medley relay, narrowed as Cooperstown won the event, but held up when Black Knights took second and third place.

“If we had flipped third and fourth, we would have won,” Cooperstown coach Cheryl Rock said. “That’s how close it was.

“It was still a great meet,” she said. “They’re an A school, and we swam well against them.”

Cooperstown’s only other loss this season came at RFA on Dec. 14, 103-77.

Mebust swam his 50 meet split in the 200 relay in 22.01 seconds, qualifying him for states in the 50 free.

One event later, he swam a 53.82 in the 100 backstroke, qualifying by more than a second.

Mebust also won the 200 free, and Cooperstown won two of three relay events, losing the 200 free.

Maddox Aramini also won two events for Cooperstown, the 200 IM and 100 butterfly and was part of the winning relays, too.

Mebust has won 10 section titles, according to Rock, who said goodbye to him and his family. Older brothers Erik and Sean also swam at Cooperstown, a decade of Mebusts winning titles, she said.

Ted has made the state tournament every year of his varsity career. In 2015, he finished sixth in the state in the 200 freestyle relay along with Sean, Michael Kern and Ian Robinson. In 2016, he finished 13th in the state in the 100 backstroke and 14th on two relay teams. In 2017, he again finished 13 in the state in the 100 backstroke.

Cooperstown will swim in the Center State Conference championships on Friday in Rome.
