Weather watch

April and May turned out drier than normal in Otsego County, with only about twothirds of the normal precipitation. April was much warmer than normal, while May averaged around three degrees cooler than normal.

With the northwesterly flow aloft and the jet stream way to the north in central Canada, the dry weather pattern will continue at least through the first week of June.

The month will begin with near-normal temperatures, followed by a warming trend.

On Friday, a southwesterly flow will develop ahead of a trough of low pressure in the western Great Lakes. We’ll get another beautiful May day, with mostly sunny skies and highs in the middle 70s.

As the low approaches central New York, look for variable cloudiness with some sunshine on Saturday. There will be scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the day, with highs of 70 to 75 degrees. Sunday will definitely be the nicer day of the weekend, as a cold front moves to the east and a northwesterly flow takes over, but there’s no cool air behind the front. With partly to mostly sunny skies on Sunday, highs will be in the lower 70s.

As high pressure builds eastward to the mid-Atlantic states, partly sunny skies will continue on Monday and Tuesday, with highs in the mid- to upper 70s.
