Knights of Columbus plan annual dinner
COOPERSTOWN — Knights of Columbus, Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Council 10968 will host its annual St. Patrick’s Dinner of corned beef and cabbage, weather-permitting, from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 16, at St. Mary’s Parish Center at 31 Elm St. in Cooperstown. The Irish Step Dancers will perform.
The public is welcome to join the Knights for what they describe as a traditional family dinner. Free-will donations will be accepted.
A cappella group to play at Woodside
COOPERSTOWN — Community Evening Programs at Woodside Hall will present the vocals of Eight is Eneuf at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 18.
Eight is Eneuf are friends who had been singing together in the Catskill Choral Society for almost two decades and decided in 2012 they wanted to sing more, presenters said in a media release. Eight is Eneuf sings madrigals, sacred music, doo wop, pop, folk songs, new age and world music. Members of the a cappella group are sopranos Susan Snelson and Kerstin Green, altos Laura Harris, Marcia Bowne and Janine Sibella, tenors Helen Benlisa, Chris Karmosky and John Willis, bass baritone Casey Thomas and bass Chris Shields, bass. Following the musical performance, refreshments will be served.

‘The Last Picture Show’ to close series
COOPERSTOWN — The Film Society of Cooperstown will end its second season on March 20 with “The Last Picture Show” (1971). Directed by Peter Bogdanovich and hailed as one of the key films of the American cinema renaissance of the 1970s, “The Last Picture Show” is set during the early 1950s in lonely and windswept small-town Texas. Filmed in black-and-white, the 118-minute modern classic — adapted from Larry McMurtry’s novel — is a drama that portrays a dying West. It focuses on the daily lives of three teens, portrayed by Timothy Bottoms, Jeff Bridges and Cybil Shepherd, and the adults who bump up against them.
Supported by the Friends of the Village Library, this season’s Film Society of Cooperstown schedule was curated by Bill Francis, researcher and writer at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, and Jeff Katz, former mayor of Cooperstown and author. The movie will be shown in the Ballroom at Village Hall at 22 Main St., starting at 7 p.m. Candy will be provided by Tin Bin Alley

Eastern Bluebird to be discussed
COOPERSTOWN — Otsego Land Trust will host New York State Bluebird Society co-founder John Rogers at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, in the Community Room at Clark Sports Center at 124 County Road 52 in Cooperstown.
According to a media release, the presentation will encompass the life history of the Eastern bluebird, other birds that nest in bluebird boxes, nest box management and more.
Attendees will also learn about OLT’s bluebird box monitoring volunteer opportunity and the presentation will serve as an introductory training. OLT needs help in stewarding its bluebird nesting boxes along its public access blueway properties. Volunteers will record findings, take photos and report to OLT at the end of the season.
Rogers has maintained a trail of bluebird nest boxes in Central New York for more than four decades. He has given bluebird slide programs and workshops to hundreds of groups in 12 states and two Canadian provinces.
As a result of his bluebird conservation work, Rogers has received numerous awards, including the John and Norah Lane Bluebird Conservation Award from the North American Bluebird Society.

COOPERSTOWN — A rummage sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, March 22, at the Cooperstown United Methodist Church at 66 Chestnut St. in Cooperstown. From 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 23, there will be a bag sale. Featured will be clothing, housewares, books and toys.

Lenten fish dinner to be offered
COOPERSTOWN — A Lenten fish dinner catered by Mel’s at 22 will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 29, at St. Mary’s Parish Hall at 31 Elm St. in Cooperstown. Stations of the Cross will begin at 6:30 p.m. Free-will donations will be accepted for the dinner.
Museum approved for project grant
COOPERSTOWN — The Mr. and Mrs. Raymond J. Horowitz Foundation for the Arts has approved the Fenimore Art Museum’s grant request of $186,330 to support the Eastman Johnson Catalogue Raisonné Project directed by Patricia Hills. The funds will be used to complete research and transfer information from an electronic database to a website platform accessible to the public. Completion of the project is projected to be Jan. 1, 2021. The Cooperstown museum’s collection includes three works by Johnson, an American painter and co-founder of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
Photographs wanted for poster contest
COOPERSTOWN — A Glimmerglass Film Days Poster Image Contest has been announced by Otsego 2000.
According to a media release, the photograph that best conveys the 2019 theme “Adaptations” will be featured in Film Days materials, including the poster, program and website.
The winning photographer will receive a cash prize of $250 and special recognition in the Film Days program.
The competition is open to professional and fine arts photographers. Submissions are limited to three per photographer.
An image taken in or near Otsego County is preferred, but not required. All photographs must be approximately 8 by 10, have a resolution of 300 dots per inch for jurying purposes and must be submitted electronically as a jpg or png file or pdf by midnight, April 9.

Tickets go on sale for hospice event
COOPERSTOWN — The 19th annual Epicurean Food and Wine Tasting sponsored by Catskill Area Hospice will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 31, at the Otesaga Resort Hotel on Lake Street in Cooperstown.
The event will begin with a sampling of wines from the Otesaga’s house collection led by Sommelier Chad Douglass. Guests will also be able to view the silent auction items.
The food tasting will begin at 4 p.m., when almost 30 restaurants, caterers and bakers will serve samples of their signature dishes. Honorary Co-Chairs Ann Wallace and Linda Evanczyk will be recognized for their efforts and many years of support. All proceeds will benefit hospice families.

Registration set for kindergartners
COOPERSTOWN — Parents living in the Cooperstown Central School District who have a child who will be 5 before Dec. 1, should call the Cooperstown Elementary School office at 607-547-9976 to begin the enrollment process for kindergarten no later than March 15.
Parent orientation will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at the elementary school on Walnut Street in Cooperstown. The meeting is for adults only. Children may be registered that evening. Verification of residency, an original or certified copy of the child’s birth certificate, immunization records and proof of a physical examination with the last 12 months should be brought to the meeting.

All things maple to be celebrated
COOPERSTOWN — All things maple will be celebrated at Sugaring Off Sundays at The Farmers’ Museum in Cooperstown on Sunday, March 17, 24 and 31. A full pancake breakfast including scrambled eggs, sausage and home fries will be served from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. with other activities scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Hot maple syrup poured over snow, known as jack wax will be available to taste. Children will learn how to tap maple trees. Maple recipes will be prepared over the wood stove in Bump Tavern. Wagon rides around the historic village will be offered from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., weather permitting. Heritage breeds of chickens, turkeys and sheep will be found in the Children’s Barnyard. Craftspeople, at work in the Blacksmith Shop, will demonstrate forge bellow repair on March 10 and 24. Otsego County Maple Producers will be available to talk about maple sugaring and offer their products for sale.
Admission is $10 for adults 13 and older; $9 for museum members; $6 for children 7 to 12 or $5 for museum members; $3 for children 3 to 6; and free for children 2 and younger.

Breakfast buffet to be held at church

DOAS looking for grant applications
Applications are being accepted by the Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society for 2019 Environmental Education Grants. Awarded annually to classroom teachers in Delaware, Otsego, eastern Chenango and western Schoharie counties, the competitive program is also available for home school programs and student service organizations.
According to a media release, grants enable educators to add new environmental and conservation focused activities to their curriculum or to continue existing initiatives. The number of awards and grant amounts are determined based on funds available and the number of qualifying proposals received. Teachers may receive one grant per school year. Grants are competitive and will be evaluated by a DOAS committee.
The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. Friday, March 29. Selected recipients will be notified no later than April 3.

Student artists may compete in contest
The Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest sponsored by the VFW Auxiliary is open to all students, including home-schooled students, in grades 9 through 12. Students must be U.S. citizens or a U.S. Nationals with a maximum age of 18 at the time of local entry. Two-dimensional art must be on canvas or paper. Watercolor, pencil, pastel, charcoal, tempera, crayon, acrylic, pen, ink, oil, marker or other media taught may be used. Three-dimensional art can be paper, papier-mâché, pottery, clay, metal work, fabric, etc. Digital art, photography and jewelry will not be accepted. Art will be judged on the patriotism theme and technique.
Entries must be received by a local VFW Auxiliary by March 31. The local contest winner will compete at the state level. One state-level winning entry will be chosen to be sent to VFW Auxiliary National Headquarters. National award winners ranging from first to eighth place will receive from $500 to $15,000 in scholarships.
The contest began in 1979 to recognize up-and-coming artists and encourage patriotism in youth.

Route 20 Assn. announces grants
The Route 20 Association of New York State recently announced a mini-grant program for municipalities. The program will recognize projects that help their communities and enhance the Route 20 Scenic Byway.
Qualifying projects must be completed within 2019. These may include projects that benefit residents and/or attract visitors through physical improvements or improved services provided. Municipalities should have at least a portion of U.S. Route 20 running through them.
Municipalities may apply for the competitive mini-grant by submitting a one-page narrative on letterhead describing the work done and benefits derived. A contact person along with contact information should also be provided. Submissions must be received by April 1. The winner will be notified around June 1.
The special “One for the Road” award will be presented at the association’s annual dinner meeting in November 2019. The amount of this year’s award will be $600. Included will be two reservations for the dinner to the municipality honored.

Project Prom for the Cooperstown High School Class of 2019 will be celebrated May 10. The 30-year community tradition promotes safety and features food, fun activities and entertainment.

Class of ‘94 award open to CCS seniors
The class of 1994 at Cooperstown Central School is seeking applicants for this year’s Christina Wayman Selan Award, named for a classmate who lost her nine-year battle with Hodgkin’s Disease on April 3, 2007. Scholarship applications are available to seniors in the guidance office.
According to a media release, the award will be presented to a Cooperstown senior who most embodies Selan’s moral character, leadership, motivation and sportsmanship. Last year’s recipient, Grace LaCates, received a $500 award as did Megan Lohan in 2017.

Volunteers needed by Big Buddy group
The Big Buddy program is seeking adult volunteers in Delaware and Otsego counties.
According to a media release from program sponsor Delaware Opportunities, youths between 5 and 14, are matched with an adult role model who serves as their big buddy.
Big buddies spend at least four hours each month with their little buddy for a minimum of one year engaging in mutually agreed upon activities.
The program also includes group activities from eight to 10 times a year where big and little buddies may go to the movies, sporting events, museums, or bowling, hiking, etc., or perform a type of community service.
Activities are structured to encompass at least one educational, one cultural, one community service and one recreational event.

Backpack Program sponsors needed
The Cooperstown Food Pantry is seeking sponsors for its Backpack Program that benefits children in the Cooperstown Central School District. According to a media release, a monthly sponsorship of $20 will provide a student with a backpack full of food each Friday for the weekend. Backpacks are filled with kid-friendly meals and snacks and fresh fruit.
Each year, the Backpack Program serves about 50 children who attend Cooperstown’s elementary and junior-senior high schools. Donations may be made online at www.cooperstownfoodpantry.org.
