Catskill Symphony Orchestra will hold the second concert of its 2012-13 season on at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, in State University College at Oneonta’s Hunt Union Ballroom. The concert will feature Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 9,” according to a media release from the orchestra.

Symphony No. 9 is arguably not only Beethoven’s most famous work, but the most famous classical work of all time. It is easily recognized for its choral arrangement popularly known as “Ode to Joy.” This piece was the last full symphony Beethoven composed before his death in 1827. He composed and conducted the premiere of this work when he was almost completely deaf.

CSO will celebrate this masterpiece with a large combined choir and soloists, including soprano Barbara Paterson, mezzo-soprano Carolyn Weber, tenor Jon Fredric West and bass Eric Johnson.

Because of an anonymous donation, free tickets are available for students and up to two adult chaperones per student order. This offer is also valid for unaccompanied high school and college students. Additionally, those who share Beethoven’s birthday, Dec. 16 or 17,  are eligible for a complimentary ticket to this concert. Proof of date of birth required; offer not valid on previously purchased tickets. Regularly priced tickets are $30 and may be purchased online at or by calling 436-2670.
