The Smithy will host its second opening reception of the season from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 17. The exhibit, “Picture This,” will be on display in The Smithy Gallery through July 19.
The artwork and artists involved in the “Picture This” exhibit will “be visualizing the written word and exploring the narrative,” according to a media release.
The first floor will feature a new series of paintings by D. Michael Price, to be used in an upcoming children’s book. Price is known for his illustrations, having published several children’s books, such as “The Great Bee Race” and “Hoppin’ Mad.” Of his work, Price said in the release, “the magical beauty to be found in the hills, valleys, forests and streams of Upstate New York” is a constant source of inspiration for him.
On the second floor, several guest artists will exhibit their work. Room One will feature paintings by Ashley Norwood Cooper and ceramics by Kirk Mayhew. In Room Two, Chris Carter, Roger DeMuth, Marjorie Kellogg, Stephanie Rozene, Phil Young and Robert Bensen will display their narrative artwork, using a variety of 2D and 3D media. Doug Jamieson, a Smithy member artist, will display a mythological series of etchings in Room Three.
Other member artists will provide their responses to the theme in the Member Artists Gallery on the third floor.
The Smithy galleries are at 55 Pioneer St. in Cooperstown. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Call 607-547-9777 or visit www.smithyarts.org for more information.
