Piper Seamon and Kate Trosset combined for 33 points as fourth-seeded Cooperstown built an early lead to defeat No. 5 Onondaga, 77-32, in the quarterfinals of the Section III Class C girls basketball tournament on Tuesday.

Trosset scored 11 first-quarter points and the Cooperstown defense allowed just one field goal as the Hawkeyes opened a 21-4 lead after the first quarter.

The deficit remained 17 heading to halftime, but Lauren Vibbard scored 10 points in the third quarter as Cooperstown outscored the visitors, 20-7, for a 50-20 advantage entering the fourth.

Seamon made seven field goals, including two 3-pointers, to finish with a game-high 17 points. Trosset also hit a pair of 3-pointers to total 16 points along with seven assists.

Vibbard was the third Hawkeye to hit a pair of threes, scoring 12 points and notching six assists.

Meagan Schuermann scored eight points and recorded 15 rebounds along with four steals, while Natalie Fountain had 10 rebounds to go with her two points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Cooperstown 72, Oriskany 41

Jack Lambert and Ryan Lansing combined for 42 points as Cooperstown overcame a slow start to clinch a spot in the Section III Class C boys semifinals.

The Hawkeyes ran out to an 18-10 lead after one quarter as Lansing made four 3-pointers, taking advantage of Oriskany’s box-and-one defense designed to contain Lambert.

Oriskany scored 11 straight to take a 21-20 lead in the second quarter after changing defenses. But Lambert responded with 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions, returning the momentum to Cooperstown. The Hawkeyes led, 33-26, at the break.

“That really swung the momentum back to us and we didn’t give it back,” Cooperstown coach John Lambert said of Jack Lambert’s 3-pointers. “Then we had a little discussion at half and we came out in the second half and played the defense we are supposed to be playing.”

The Hawkeyes outscored the visitors, 25-10, in the third quarter and allowed just 15 second-half points.

Lambert made three 3-pointers and 10 field goals total to lead all scorers with 24 points. He also broke the Cooperstown varsity steals record, grabbing a steal in the third quarter for his 182nd varsity theft, passing Tyler Bertram’s previous mark of 181.

Lansing finished with five 3-pointers and 18 points, while John Kennedy totaled 13. Noah Lifgren scored nine and played what coach Lambert called “phenomenal” defense on Oriskany center Aaron Warcup.

“With this team, I don’t worry about if someone goes on a run on us. It’s not the first time someone has done that. We came from behind in five of our first eight games,” John Lambert said “Runs are gonna happen, it’s how you handle it that smatters. And that’s what I was most proud of with tonight’s game.”

The Hawkeyes will play No. 3 Weedsport in the section semifinals on Saturday at the SRC Arena on the campus of Onondaga Community College.
