A late second-half surge was not enough as 13th-seeded Cooperstown fell to No. 4 Westmoreland/Oriskany, 3-2, in the first round of the Section III Class C boys soccer tournament Wednesday, Oct. 23, at Westmoreland Central School.
Trailing, 3-0, at halftime, the Hawkeyes made it close in the waning minutes as Sam Lytel and Jackson Martz scored in quick succession.
Lytel put Cooperstown on the scoreboard with 8:39 left in the second half before Martz converted a penalty kick two minutes later, cutting the deficit to one.
The Hawkeyes failed to find an equalizing goal despite finishing with a 19-8 lead in shots and an 8-4 edge in corners.
“We had ample opportunity to score and win, but unfortunately we did not,” Cooperstown coach Frank Miosek said. “We look forward to next year with great expectations.”
Westmoreland/Oriskany took its three-goal lead with three counterattack goals in the first half.
Even before Lytel scored for Cooperstown, the Hawkeyes had numerous scoring opportunities. Three Cooperstown shots hit the crossbar, and Westmoreland/Oriskany saved a Cooperstown penalty kick which also saw the Hawkeyes fail to convert the rebound.
Eric Kukenberger and Kendall Haney each saw time in goal for Cooperstown. Kukenberger finished with one save and Haney made four.
