Leonard places third at state wrestling tournament

GREG KLEIN | The Daily Star Cooperstown’s Avery Leonard tries to hook Norwich’s Dante Geislinger during the Division II 106-pound semifinals Saturday in Albany. Leonard lost to Geislinger, who won his second straight state title, but won two more matches to finish third.

ALBANY — Milford sophomore Avery Leonard placed third at 106 pounds for Cooperstown in the NYSPHSAA Division II championships Saturday at the Times Union Center.

Leonard (48-5) became the first Milford student to place at the state tournament in wrestling. He lost to defending champ Dante Geislinger on a late pinfall in the semifinal match Saturday morning, but won the wrestleback bracket with a 6-4 decision over Muskan Monger of Warsaw and a second-period pin on Bayport-Bluepoint’s Joe Sparacio in the consolation finals.

Geislinger, a junior from Norwich, won his second state title Saturday evening.

“It has been a good weekend, not just for Avery, but for T.J. O’Connor, too,” Cooperstown coach Mike Croft said. “T.J. (didn’t place) but he won two matches after he lost his first match, and he ended up 2-2. That’s an amazing experience for a seventh-grader.”
