Morris tops Milford in T-V thriller

CHERYL CLOUGHMorris guard Matt Murphy tries to spin away from Milford defender Garrett Mertz in the Mustangs’ 70-64 win against the Wildcats in Milford.

Nate Edwards scored 19 points to lead five Morris players with at least nine, and the Mustangs ended Milford’s 11-game win streak with a 70-64 road win in a battle of state-ranked Tri-Valley League boys basketball teams.

Morris (14-1, 9-0), ranked eighth in the state for Class D by the New York State Sportswriters Association, remained unbeaten in the TVL by dealing Milford (13-3, 7-1), ranked fifth in Class D, its first league loss.

After Milford honored its 11 seniors and Morris’ eight seniors prior to the game, the visting Mustangs overcame an early deficit.

Milford took a 17-13 lead after one, expanding the deficit to as much as 13 in the second quarter. A Morris run late in the half erased the deficit, and the visiting Mustangs took a 37-35 lead into the break.

The contest remained tight throughout, but Morris leaned on nine three-pointers in the game to stay ahead of Milford.

“The game definitely lived up to its billing. It was a good game,” Milford coach Greg Eggleston said. “It was just one of those things where they hit really timely threes, it just seemed like every time we needed a stop.”

Edwards made nine field goals and one foul shot to lead the Mustangs with 19 points. Matt Murphy, who scored 55 last Wednesday against Schenevus, and Brandon Richards both scored 14 for Morris. Most of Richards’ points came via four three-pointers.

Jake Goodspeed and Tylor Kopp scored nine each for the Mustangs, with Kopp scoring all nine of his points from behind the arc.

“The gameplan was to shut down Murphy and let the other guys beat us. That’s exactly what happened,” Eggleston said. “Holding Murphy to 14 was a positive for us, but we gave up threes, and they hit them at a pretty good rate. Kudos to those kids for hitting those shots.”

Wynn Williams recorded another double-double for Milford with a game-high 21 points as well as 14 rebounds and three blocks.

Cian Hall scored 16, also recording a double-double with 10 rebounds, while Garrett Mertz had six points and seven assists for the Wildcats.
