Sports Roundup: Leonard wins section title, advances to state; Coop boys win share of division title with comeback win

ContributedMilford sophomore Avery Leonard placed first in the Section III Division II wrestling tournament Saturday in Syracuse and has qualified for the state tournament Feb. 22-23 in Albany.

Cooperstown’s Avery Leonard won a Section III Division II title at 106 pounds Saturday at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse to clinch a spot in the state wrestling tournament.

Leonard, a sophomore at Milford, defeated Central Valley Academy’s Kace Cook by an 8-0 major decision in the final.

Previous rounds saw Leonard pin Mount Markham’s Aydin DeForest in 41 seconds in the semifinals and produce a 19-3 technical fall over Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s Aaron Moir in the quarterfinals.

T.J. O’Connor also placed for the Hawkeyes, taking third at 99 pounds. O’Connor, a seventh grader at Milford, pinned Chittenango’s Blayde DeBlieux in 5:03 to advance to the semifinals, where he fell to CVA’s Sixx Cook, 7-4.

O’Connor bounced back to defeat Beaver River’s Andre Lyndaker, 6-4, in sudden victory of the consolation final. A takedown in added time solidified his third-place finish.

The win clinched third place and some revenge for the Hawkeye 99-pounder, as Lyndaker had pinned O’Connor in 24 seconds during last weekend’s Class D tournament final. Cooperstown coach Michael Croft called O’Connor’s performance “a huge accomplishment” as a seventh-grader.

Cooperstown finished tied for 18th out of 30 teams with 42.5 points. CVA won the team title with 155 points.

Leonard awaits seeding for the state championships, scheduled for Feb. 22-23 at the Times Union Center in Albany.
