Sports Roundup: Hawkeyes win CSC titles in wrestling, swimming

WRESTLING

Logan Kantor won Most Outstanding Wrestler honors in the lightweight division and was one of three Cooperstown wrestlers who won championships Saturday at the Center State Conference League Championships.

Kantor won in the 126 pound finals by decision, defeating Jason Schlotzhauer of Morrisville-Eaton, 10-8, to cap a 3-0 day. Two wins came by decision, accompanied by a 24-second pin of Morrisville-Eaton’s Barry Spriggs.

Avery Leonard won both of his matches by technical fall to win at 106 pounds. It was the second CSC title for Leonard, a sophomore at Milford Central School. Leonard recorded an 18-2 win in the final over Mount Markham’s Aydin DeForest, improving his record to 38-4.

T.J. O’Connor went 3-0 and won the 99-pound weight class, winning all three matches by pin. O’Connor, a seventh grader at MCS, needed just 63 seconds in his final match to dispatch Holland Patent’s Carter Williams.

Cooperstown had three other place winners, with Matt LoRusso finishing fourth at 106, Lucian Lytel taking fifth at 138, and Logan Doucas finishing sixth at 220.

Cooperstown hosts the Section III Class D tournament Saturday.

SWIMMING

CSC Chamionships

Jan. 25

Maddox Aramini placed first in four events, including two individual races, as the Hawkeyes placed third in the Center State Conference championships at Rome Free Academy.

Aramini, a senior at Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School, won the 100 butterfly in 57.08, a time Cooperstown coach Cheryl Rock called “incredible,” and broke his own record in the 200 individual medley, placing first in 2:05.19.

Aramini was also part of the 200-yard medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay that took first for the Hawkeyes.

Nathaniel Miller, Gareth Austin and Ewan Chapman teamed up with Aramini in the 200-yard medley relay, winning in 1:49.61.

Aramini, Chapman, William Friedman and Max Hinrichs placed first in the 200 free relay in 1:36.94.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Unatego 42, Cooperstown 28

Unatego’s Meghan Perry scored 18 points as Unatego defeated Cooperstown in non-league play.

Perry was the only player on either team to hit double-digit scoring. Dana Stepp scored eight points, Morgan Perry scored six and Morgan Newman and Hali Lucia scored five each for Unatego.

The Spartans brought a four-point lead into the fourth quarter, and held the Hawkeyes to just four points in the final frame to close out the win.

“Our defense has been a strong point and it helped us tonight,” Unatego coach Bob Zeh said. “We locked down on Piper Seamon and Kate Trosset, Cooperstown’s biggest scorers, and won.”

Cooperstown was led by Trosset and Seamon, with nine and eight points, respectively. Emilie Perez scored five. The Hawkeyes had won seven-straight games since their Dec. 27 home loss to Unatego, 48-44. 

Cooperstown (11-5, 5-0) will play Thursday in a Center State Conference Division III game at Mount Markham.

Six Franklin players scored as the Purple Devils held host Milford to single digits in all four quarters of a Tri-Valley League win.

Franklin took a 12-2 lead after one, an edge that grew to 18 at halftime.

“They (Franklin) have a nice team and they all complement each other well,” Milford coach Jim Weir said.

Kayla Campbell hit five of Franklin’s seven 3-pointers to lead all scorers with 23 points. Alyssa Nowhitney scored eight for the Purple Devils (15-2, 9-0), while Marissa Campbell, Julie Archibald and Olivia Hyzer scored six each.

Teeghan Gale scored seven to pace Milford (5-12, 3-7).

Jan. 27

Franklin rode 11 three-pointers and a double-double from Carson Dutcher to deal Milford a defeat in the Tri-Valley League.

Milford took an 11-10 lead after one, but the Purple Devils outscored the visitors, 35-18, over the second and third quarters to take control.

Dutcher went to the free-throw line 15 times, making 11 of his attempts and finishing with a game-high 21 points. He also had 10 rebounds.

Colin Campbell hit a three in every quarter, including two in the first, to finish with 18 points for Franklin. Matt Serrao scored nine points on three three-point baskets.

Garrett Mertz made six field goals and led the Wildcats with 13 points. Wynn Williams had 12.

Milford struggled from line, going 5-for-19.

Jan. 25

Jack Lambert led all scorers with 27 points in Cooperstown’s convincing win against Westmoreland in a Center State Conference Division III game.

Lambert made three 3-pointers and went 4-for-5 from the free-throw line. He also finished with nine assists and eight rebounds in the win.

Cooperstown broke the 20-point threshold in each of the first three quarters, scoring 15 in the fourth.

Noah Lifgren made 11 field goals on his way to 22 points for the Hawkeyes, grabbing five rebounds in the process.

Lambert and Lifgren were the only Hawkeyes to finish in double figures.
